Men’s skincare: 5 reasons why it’s important!

Gone are the days of blokes turning up their noses at the idea of skincare. These days, men know that healthy skin is just as important as a healthy body.

Men should follow a skincare routine that looks after their skin and improves its appearance. Men’s skincare routines will help deal with issues such as oiliness and acne, wrinkles and other signs of aging, and shaving irritation. Also, most importantly, they will boost confidence levels.

Has your one skincare product up until now been a bar of soap that you use everywhere on everything? No judgement, guys. Check out five reasons why men’s skincare is so important. Plus, my recommendations for some great skincare products you can use immediately.

1. Men and Women Have Different Skin Compositions

There are some pretty obvious differences between men and women. However, did you know that men and women also have quite different skin

Because of testosterone, men’s skin tends to be oiler tougher than women’s. This means it takes longer for our skin to show the signs of ageing (hooray), but it also means our skin can appear greasier (boo). Hence why men’s skincare is so important.

If you’re a guy with oilier skin, you should be cleansing each night before you go to bed. Make sure you’re only cleansing at night, though, otherwise you risk causing your skin to become dry, irritated and flaky. And no, cleansing does not mean using a bar of soap and some water.

You should use a specific cleanser that matches your skin type - one great product I’ve been using lately is the Salt + Glow Eden hemp and kale oil cleanser

2. Spare Yourself From the Signs of Aging

Now, I know I just said that the signs of aging take longer to show up for men. But, unfortunately, they will show up eventually (unless you’re Paul Rudd of course).

That means you should be using a moisturiser, both after cleansing at night and in the morning. Different moisturisers match different skin types. Dry skin needs a more intensive moisturiser, and oily skin will need something lighter.

A great all-rounder choice is Jaxon Lane Relax and Repair Ultimate Anti Aging moisturiser.

3. Protect Yourself From the Sun

Us Aussies know that sunburn is a big deal - not only because of its skin-damaging effects but because of potentially deadly skin cancer. If the UV is high (8 or above) it takes only ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure to be burnt.

Sunscreen is not something that you should be chucking on five minutes before you hit the beach, by the way. It’s something that should be a part of your daily skincare routine.

Just like moisturisers, there are different sunscreens for different skin types. If you’re a guy with oily skin, use an oil-free sunscreen. If you’re a guy with dry skin, use a sunscreen with moisturising ingredients.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra-Light Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 is a great choice for daily wear.

4. Banish Shaving Rash

Dealing with facial hair may not seem like it’s part of a men’s skincare routine, but it is. Issues like shaving rash can have a pretty nasty effect on your skin, and you also need to take care of the skin under that glorious beard of yours. Thankfully, there are a variety of men’s grooming products that will help you.

Step one of preventing shaving rash is exfoliating your skin. Use a chemical exfoliator, such as Paula’s Choice 2% BHA liquid exfoliant, as it’s less harsh on your skin. You should also be using a shaving cream, such as PC4Men Shave, to prevent the friction between your skin and your razor -  the thing that causes shaving rash in the first place.

However, if you’re keeping your facial hair, you need to know how to look after it too. Longer beards and designer stubble should be maintained with beard care products like aftershave and beard oil (a great choice is Ten Trees Organic). Both are great for your skin, and beard oil will also make sure your beard looks well-groomed (and not like you’ve been stuck on a desert island for the past six months).

5. Send your Confidence Skyrocketing

Feeling great on the outside means feeling great on the inside, and to me, that’s the main benefit that comes with a skincare routine.

Along with everything I’ve talked about in the article so far, there’s one more thing you can do to complete your skincare regime (and it’s also a massive confidence boost as well): find your signature scent.

I promise that the HERCK range of men’s fragrances will make you feel like a living god - and who doesn’t want to feel as might as Zeus when they walk into their next meeting?

Because HERCK fragrances are solid (meaning they’re wax-based), they last a long time. They’re also alcohol free and won’t dry out or irritate your skin, unlike a lot of liquid fragrances.

After following the rest of your skincare regime (which you’re definitely going to do now that I’ve explained how important it is), apply the fragrance to your pulse-points (your neck, your wrists and your inner elbows). Oh, and insider tip: wipe your fingers on your beard or stubble after applying the fragrance. You’ll thank me later, mate.

  • Cleanse at night.
  • Moisturise to prevent the signs of ageing.
